it's a....????

39 years and 364 days ago, my mother was about to go into labor and give birth to me. She and my father fully expected me to be a boy - you know, all those old wives' tales about how you're carrying, the swinging ring, etc., etc. They were gonna name me George (well, at least that's what my mom told me many years ago when one of her boyfriends started calling me that as a nickname!)

But lo and behold, on December 7, 1966, out I came. A girl. Sheesh. Now what? What do we call this girl child?

"Oh wait...I know!" my mom says, in a pain killer-induced stupor, "Let's name her after my youngest sister AND give her godmother's name as a middle name. And so I became Bernadette Ginette Ouellet. Yes. God bless my grandmother, who insisted that my name was going to be torture. The official name was LINDA.

Tomorrow I celebrate the 11th anniversary of my 29th birthday. Or, as my SISTER says, I will be 29 with 11 years' experience!

And if I were to die soon after, here's what my obituary would say:

Your grandmother was a wise and rational woman. Even if you HADN'T become Linda, we would still love to read your words of wisdom and happiness.

May this be the happiest birthday for you yet. You have so much to celebrate.

Your grandmother should be up for Sainthood.

Bernadette Oulett?

Wow.

For the record, I died laughing.

I will be missed by the tollbooth guy.
